After an accident: what to do first

Who should I call first?

That’s up to you — there’s no wrong first move. You’re not required to contact your insurance company before getting an estimate, so whether you’ve already filed a claim or you’re just getting started, we’re glad to walk you through the first steps and answer any questions along the way.

It depends on the extent of the damage. If airbags deployed, if there is visible structural damage, if any fluids are leaking, or if the vehicle handles differently than normal, it should not be driven. When in doubt, call us and we can help assess the situation. Towing is available if your vehicle cannot be safely driven to our shop.

Collect the other driver’s name, contact information, insurance company, and policy number. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses. Photograph the damage to all vehicles, the surrounding area, and any relevant road conditions or signage. File a police report if one is required in your situation. All of this helps when the claim is filed.

As soon as it is safe to do so. Some damage that looks minor on the surface can affect structural components, alignment, or safety systems underneath. The sooner we can assess the full scope of the damage, the sooner we can help you understand your options and begin coordinating repairs.

You have the right to choose your own repair shop. Your insurance company may recommend shops from their preferred network, but the choice belongs to you. Choosing a shop with the right certifications and repair standards for your vehicle is worth paying attention to, regardless of what your insurer recommends.

Insurance and claims

How does the insurance claim process work at Collision Center 1?

We work directly with your insurance company and assist you through the process from start to finish. After your initial estimate, we communicate with your insurer, coordinate repair authorization, and keep the process moving. You do not have to manage the back-and-forth on your own. We handle it alongside you.

No. Insurance companies may suggest shops from their preferred network, but you are not required to use them. You have the legal right to choose where your vehicle is repaired. We work with most major insurance companies regardless of network affiliation.
That is entirely your call. Some customers prefer to keep a repair off their insurance record. We can provide an estimate and work with you directly. If cost is a concern, we offer financing through Sunbit so you can cover the repair over time without a large upfront payment.
We accept cash, personal or business checks, and major credit cards.
This happens. When we find additional damage during the repair process, we document it and submit a supplement to your insurance company for approval. We manage that process for you. The goal is to complete the repair correctly, not to cut corners because the initial estimate was incomplete.
Your insurance company may ask for multiple estimates, but you are not legally required to get them. If you have chosen your shop based on certifications, reputation, and fit for your vehicle, one thorough estimate from a qualified shop is enough. We will work with your insurer on the numbers.
If your vehicle is totaled, we will guide you through that conversation with your insurance company. A total loss determination means the cost of repair exceeds a threshold relative to the vehicle’s value. We help you understand what that means, what your options are, and what to expect from your insurer throughout that process.

The repair process

What does the repair process look like from start to finish?

It starts with an initial call and estimate. Once we have a full picture of the damage, we walk you through the repair plan and coordinate with your insurance company if you are filing a claim. After authorization, we schedule drop-off, order parts, complete the repair in stages with quality checkpoints throughout, and do a final review before you pick up your vehicle. At delivery we walk through the completed work with you.

Every repair is different. Repair time depends on the extent of the damage, the parts required, insurance coordination, and the repair schedule at the time of drop-off. We cannot give a reliable timeline without seeing the vehicle. Bring it in for an estimate and we can give you a realistic picture based on what we find.
We keep you informed throughout the process. When you drop your vehicle off, ask us about your preferred way to receive updates and we will work with you on that.
Some damage is not visible until the vehicle is disassembled. When we find it, we document it, photograph it, and submit a supplement to your insurance company for approval before proceeding. We do not proceed with undocumented work without keeping you informed.
We prioritize OEM parts for quality and safety. If an alternative part is needed or preferred, we discuss the options with you before proceeding. The right parts decision depends on your vehicle, your insurance policy, repair requirements, and applicable Minnesota law.
Yes. Many modern vehicles have advanced driver assistance systems that require recalibration after a collision repair. Cameras, sensors, and related systems need to be properly reset to function as intended. We address this as part of the repair process in accordance with OEM procedures.
We complete a thorough final quality inspection before any vehicle is returned to its owner. This includes reviewing the repair work, checking paint finish and color match, verifying all systems are functioning correctly, and cleaning the vehicle inside and out before delivery.

paint

What kind of paint do you use?

All four Collision Center 1 auto body locations use PPG Envirobase High Performance waterborne paint. It is one of the leading paint systems in the collision repair industry, known for precise color matching and a finish that holds up over time.

Yes. We use PPG Envirobase High Performance waterborne paint with precision color matching to replicate your vehicle’s factory finish. The goal is a result that is indistinguishable from the original. All paint work is covered by our limited lifetime warranty.

Waterborne paint uses water as the primary carrier instead of chemical solvents. It produces significantly lower VOC emissions during application, which is better for the technicians working with it and for the environment. It also delivers exceptional color accuracy. All four of our auto body locations use it as standard.

Yes. Paint work at Collision Center 1 is covered by our limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. If you have a concern about paint quality after your repair, bring it back in and we will take a look.

PDR, hail damage, and auto glass

What is paintless dent repair (PDR)?

Paintless dent repair is a method of removing minor dents and dings from a vehicle’s body panels without sanding, filling, or repainting. When the paint is intact and the damage has not stretched the metal beyond repair, PDR restores the panel to its original shape while preserving the factory finish. All four Collision Center 1 auto body locations offer PDR.

We start with a thorough assessment of the full extent of the hail damage across the entire vehicle, not just the obvious areas. Depending on the severity and location of each impact, we determine whether PDR, conventional repair, or a combination of both is the right approach. We work directly with your insurance company to document and process the claim.

Yes. Auto glass repair and replacement is handled in-house at our locations. You do not need to coordinate a separate vendor. We assess the damage and determine whether a repair or a full replacement is the right solution.

It depends on the size, depth, and location of the chip or crack. Small chips in certain areas of the windshield can often be repaired without replacement. Larger cracks or damage in the driver’s primary line of sight typically require full replacement. We assess each situation individually and give you a clear recommendation.

Rental cars and towing

Can I get a rental car while my vehicle is being repaired?

Yes. We help coordinate rental vehicles for customers who need one during their repair. When you drop off your vehicle, let us know you need a rental and we will help get that set up.

Rental coverage depends on your specific policy. Many policies include it, but not all. Check with your insurance company before assuming it is covered. If rental coverage is not part of your policy, we can still help you coordinate a vehicle.
Yes. We offer 24-hour towing through Kustom Karriers. If your vehicle is not drivable after an accident, call us and we will coordinate towing directly to our shop. You do not have to figure out the logistics on your own.
Call us first. We will help coordinate 24-hour towing through Kustom Karriers to bring your vehicle to our shop. If you are at the scene of an accident and need immediate assistance, make sure you are in a safe location before you call.

Warranty and quality

What warranty do you offer on collision repairs?

Collision Center 1 provides a limited lifetime warranty on repair workmanship and paint for as long as you own the vehicle. This covers the quality of the work performed at our shops. If something is not right after you pick up your vehicle, bring it back and we will make it right.
Replacement parts are covered according to the applicable manufacturer warranty for each part. That coverage varies by part and manufacturer. We can explain what applies to your specific repair when we walk through the estimate.

Every repair at Collision Center 1 follows OEM-specified repair procedures for the vehicle being worked on. Our technicians hold I-CAR Gold and I-CAR Platinum certifications across all four auto body locations. Before your vehicle is returned to you, it goes through a final quality inspection. And all work is backed by our limited lifetime warranty on workmanship and paint.

Call us. We stand behind our work and want to know if something is not right. Bring the vehicle back to the location that performed the repair and we will assess the concern. If it is covered under our warranty, we will address it at no charge.

OEM certifications and repair standards

What are OEM certifications and why do they matter?

OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. When a shop holds an OEM certification for a specific vehicle brand, it means that shop has met the manufacturer’s requirements for tools, training, and repair procedures for that make. Certified shops have access to the manufacturer’s repair documentation and follow the procedures the vehicle was designed to require. Not every shop holds these certifications.

OEM certifications vary by location. Hopkins Auto Body 1 is certified for Nissan, Infiniti, Hyundai, Kia, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat. Collision Center 1 Golden Valley is certified for Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, GMC, Chevrolet, Buick, Hyundai, Kia, Cadillac, and Volvo. Ed’s Collision 1 is certified for Nissan, Infiniti, Hyundai, Kia, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, Subaru, GMC, Chevrolet, Buick, Hummer, Cadillac, Ford, and Lincoln. Collision Center 1 Prior Lake does not currently hold OEM certifications but follows OEM repair procedures and employs I-CAR Gold certified technicians.

Using a shop that follows OEM repair procedures and holds the applicable certification for your vehicle helps ensure the repair meets the standard your manufacturer requires. Non-certified shops may not have access to the manufacturer’s repair documentation or required procedures, which can create complications for your vehicle’s warranty coverage. We recommend verifying this with your manufacturer or dealer for your specific situation.
I-CAR is an industry training and certification organization for collision repair professionals. I-CAR Gold Class is a shop-level designation that indicates the shop’s team maintains ongoing training to current repair standards. I-CAR Platinum is an individual technician certification. All four Collision Center 1 auto body locations hold I-CAR Gold Class status, and our technicians hold I-CAR Platinum certifications.
